Pastor's Pen - Christmas:  What Are We Really Celebrating?

What the entire world needs to understand is that what Christians are truly celebrating at Christmas time is that God Himself, the God of the universe, the Creator of all things, in the person of God-the-Son, Jesus Christ, came into the world. “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” (Matthew 1:23) For whatever reason, the world, as a whole, just shrugs their shoulders and say “Jesus Christ’s birth … what’s the big deal?” The big deal is that this isn’t just another man-made religion. This is the “True God”. The True Savior of mankind. He’s not just one among many great religious leaders. No, He is God. That’s a big deal. I think what the man said to D. James Kennedy states what people of the world think of Jesus Christ…

Pastor Kennedy said in a sermon, “I remember years ago, talking to a man in his home about Christ and asking him who he thought Jesus was. He said, ‘Oh, He’s a wonderful man. He was the greatest man who ever lived, the most loving and gracious person who ever walked upon this earth.’ I said, ‘Let me tell you something I believe will startle you. According to the Scriptures, and the historic Christian faith, Jesus of Nazareth, the Carpenter of Galilee was and is the Eternal Creator of the universe, the Omnipotent, Omniscient, and Almighty God.’ Instantly, his eyes filled with tears and this man of about 55 or 60 said, ‘I have been in church all of my life and I never heard that before. But I have always thought that is the way it ought to be – that God ought to be like Jesus’”

The Lord Jesus is so, so, so much different than any other person who has walked the planet earth.

Buddha never claimed to be God. Moses never claimed to be Jehovah. Mohammed never claimed to be Allah. Yet Jesus Christ claimed to be the true and living God. Buddha simply said, “I am a teacher in search of the truth.” Jesus said, “I am the Truth.” Confucius said, “I never claimed to be holy.” Jesus said, “Who convicts me of sin?” Mohammed said, “Unless God throws his cloak of mercy over me, I have no hope.” Jesus said, “Unless you believe in me, you will die in your sins”

We need to keep CHRIST in CHRISTmas, but we also need to have a full understanding of how big of a deal it is.

God bless,

Pastor Scott
